South Dakota — 12/10/2025 — The Great Plains Housing Initiative (GPHI) today announced it has surpassed $2 million in purchased home loans through its Native Impact Fund (NIF). The milestone reflects growing demand from Native community development financial institutions (CDFIs) for accessible liquidity that supports continued home lending on tribal lands.
Recent loan purchases include $1.5 million in loans from Tiwa Lending Services, a Native CDFI serving Isleta Pueblo Tribal Members and Native Americans within the Bernalillo, Valencia, and Sandoval Counties of New Mexico. GPHI also purchased a total of $600,000 in loans from Four Bands Community Fund and Lakota Federal Credit Union, two Native CDFIs serving Native communities across South Dakota.
Loan sales to NIF allow Native CDFIs to access capital while retaining servicing rights, a core value for lenders rooted in cultural relationships. The approach enables the CDFIs to free up capital, lend quickly to customers, and keep critical housing finance circulating within their communities.
Since its launch in 2024, NIF has become a trusted option for Native CDFIs seeking flexible liquidity aligned with cultural values, community knowledge, and mission-driven lending. The pipeline now includes lenders across multiple regions who cannot access traditional secondary markets due to trust land complexities, non-conforming underwriting, or the need to preserve local borrower relationships.
“For us, the benefit is simple: We gain liquidity and continue to stand with our borrowers,” said Sheila Herrera – Executive Director of Tiwa Lending Services. “The Native Impact Fund understands how vital those relationships are. Selling to NIF supports our lending capacity without sacrificing the trust we’ve built over years.”
This announcement comes on the heels of new investments from Rural Community Assistance Corporation, Northwest Area Foundation, and Mountain Plains Community Development Corporation, reflecting growing national confidence in NIF’s ability to expand housing finance in Indian Country.
With continued capital commitments and a growing roster of Native CDFIs engaged, GPHI anticipates significant expansion of NIF activity throughout 2026.
